I saw this pattern in an article that PeterE posted on MBKFA. I chose to modify it a bit, to make it easier to tie, and frankly I like the profile better. The article stated that it was a favorite redfish fly in the Gulf region. I don't doubt this as it is similar to a pattern that I myself have used to catch a few of them. It also will apply all the flash of a spoon fly without the epoxy work, and maybe not twisting the leader so much.

Hook-Mustad 3407 sz1
Thread- UTC tan 280
Body-Gold mylar cord
Head-red chenille (I like the kind with a bit of flash)

Here is the cord I used, way cheap at Hobby Lobby, WalMart, etc....

Cut 6 sections about 2inches long, and remove the inner cotton core.

Tie on some dumbells, wrap a thread base then lash a section on each side of the hook, under the barb. The picture shows the cord on top, but when you pull the thread tight it will roll to the far side. You want the cord lashed to the sides, not top and bottom.

I missed a step in the pics, fold the front legs of the cord sections back and overwrap so that all four legs point to the rear. Continue this two more times until you reach to just behind the hook, like this.

Bottom view.

Tie in chenille.

Form head and tie off.

Starting at the ends, use a bodkin to fray the mylar cord, and you're done.

Bottom view.

This is the original pattern, which called for 3, 3 piece sections with the third tied to the top of the fly. I thought it bushier than needed and the third section greatly complicates the tying process.

Very cool. Think I'll tie a few of these up and give 'em a go this year.
