I had to go to drill in Atlanta this past weekend. I always wanted to do some fishing in GA, but had never got around to it whenever I went there to drill. This time I told one of my buddies that I wanted to go fishing in the Chattahoochee and he said he wanted to go, so we went after work on Saturday. We drove from Fort Gillem to Northwest Atlanta where I chose a spot on the map that looked good. After we got there, we searched hard for a place to get in the river after an outdated Google Maps led us to a spot that was pretty close to an overgrown cliff drop by some newly built office buildings. We ended up crossing the river on a pipeline and crawling down to the bank. Once we got there it was clear that the river was down a bit. I would like to venture a few feet. Haha. Yeah. It was down a lot.

We were both unprepared for wading, so we cleared the pockets on our street clothes and went barefoot up the river.

There were only about two good holes for the mile we waded upstream that held some bass and the rest was about ankle deep. We both caught a few bass and a bunch of bream.

Overall, it was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon and made drill a little more enjoyable that weekend. Here are a few pics of our catch:

Lesson 1: If you bring your poles to fish.....bring the rest, dummy!
Lesson 2: Google maps is not that updated...at least check out the terrain features before you go so you don't have to repel off a cliff to get to the water, dummy!
Lesson 3: The Chattahooche has plently of slate and sharp rocks the more North you go. Bring some damn shoes you plan on getting wet at the very least, dummy!

I also stopped at the Coosa off of I-20 as I was driving back to Bham on Sunday afternoon to wet a line. It was also as low (like it has been since I moved here in 2010) and I got completely skunked for the hour and half I was there. One nibble without a hookup, probably by a bream, and that was it.

Better than sitting on the couch watching a bunch of goobs whacking a golf egg around the pasture any day

FYI, I don't know about the street map version, but the "aerial" view on Bing maps is way newer than the satellite view on Google maps. It looks like it was taken in the fall or winter too.

Looks like a nice day out to me. When you said you went barefoot, I cringed. Where I go, that would be a death sentence.

Yeah the feet were a little beat up afterwards, but we had fun and I agree with squirrel. I'll check out the bing maps. I just have always used google as my default, but thats about to change. I've been burned by their outdated satellite views one time too many now. Haha

That's the way to take advantage of drill weekend.

Looks like a good afternoon on the water.

Are you sure this was the Chattahoochee or were you on a feeder creek?

Yep. We took exit 255 off of I-75 north and went up Cobb Parkway to the river. Any good suggestions of places in or around ATL to go?

I'm thinking next month I'll head up Morgan Falls Dam or up north along the chattahoochee into the trout area. Maybe I can give y'all some porn then...it'll be pretty smutty though with a spinning reel in the background. Haha. I've been thinking of picking up a flyrod, but I tend to take forever to research things and convince myself that I can drop the cash on them. We'll see. Maybe I'll find a reasonable rod and reel on here in the off topic section.
