nuke plant on the broad

Postby TygerRiverWalker » Thu May 15, 2008 2:05 pm

Heard about this for the first time last week. Then I drove by the site Wed.. I have heard that 60 to 70k gallons of water will be lost daily, and environmentalist say the Broad can't take that. You guys know anything about this?

No, i haven't heard anything about it. Maybe Smalljaws knows something about it and can shed some light. Thanks for letting us know though. We need to get to the facts for sure.

It will be in the same site that they tried to build it in back in the early 80's. The jobs would be great but the river can't handle the loss of water or the warm water discharge. They've been talking about it for months now and they've had several meetings at the college talking with area residents.

actually I do remember a meeting about something that SJ told me about a few months ago but it was too late for me to make it. Maybe this is what it was about, I forget. Hmm...I really would like to hear what the DNRs opinion is on this plant and how it is going to affect the smallie fishery they have worked hard to manage and develop.

Yep, thats the one! I don't know how far along in the process it is but there is a sign and a guard house/gate there.

The guard house has been there since the first time they tried to build the plant there. From what I gathered they drained several on the pond on the site but they left the 300 acre lake alone. If you google map it you can see what I'm talking about.

I want to hear what the DNR has to say myself. They spent millions over the years stocking smallmouth so a the warmwater discharge would pretty much ruin that. Surely they have something to say.

Duke Energy has been buying lots of land to build a 2500 acre lake on the Broad River. I have asked around and heard several different sizes of the lake from 2500 to 10000 acres. SCDOT will have to build new roads if its bigger than what was said to start with.
